Shaftesbury Glen relies on a time-tested method to send golfers home happy: outstanding bentgrass greens and a fun, playable design.
The newest of the four Glens Group courses, Shaftesbury opened in 2001. The course was designed by Clyde Johnston but inspired by the work of legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast.
The elevated greens and finger bunkers are, by design, reminiscent of Winged Foot, one of Tillinghast’s signature designs. The putting surfaces have gone a long way toward making Shaftesbury such a popular design.
At a time when most Myrtle Beach golf courses are, understandably, moving toward the newer strains of Bermuda grass, Shaftesbury, with its open design, is an ideal environment for bentgrass and it shows. The greens are smooth and fast, providing a true roll.
The airy conditions that are so favorable to bentgrass, also help make the course open off the tee, allowing players latitude with the driver. While there is little trouble off the tee, the approach is vital to success.
Dreams of par often die in those bunkers, so make sure your iron game is tuned up.
A former winner of the prestigious Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year award, Shaftesbury was also named one of the top 50 resorts in the world by readers of Golf World magazine, and Golf Digest awarded it 4 stars in its Best Place to Play guide.
