The combination of The King, Arnold Palmer, and a stunning piece of real estate conspired to make Rivers Edge Golf Club one of the most scenic courses along the East Coast.
Playing along the Shallotte River, the layout is striking. Seven holes follow the river, including an unforgettable finish with the final four holes all playing along its marshy waters. It’s as pretty a stretch of holes as there is on the Myrtle Beach golf scene.
Rivers Edge earned a spot on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses based on the layout’s strength from the first tee to the 18th hole. The beauty of the holes along the Shallotte River is complemented by the architectural strength of the inland offerings.
A pair of memorable par 4s on the opposite ends of the spectrum – the mammoth 440-yard sixth hole and the 331-yard 14th – are a testament to the design work of Palmer’s team.
With a subtropical climate and the brackish waters of the Shallotte River, Rivers Edge was the first course in the area to install paspalum, a sodium tolerant grass, on its greens, and the results have been outstanding.
A 4 1/2-star layout, according to Golf Digest’s Best Place to Play guide, Rivers Edge is, if not the prettiest course on the Myrtle Beach golf scene, on the (very) short list. It’s a round of golf no one in your group will soon forget.
