Located in the quiet, scenic portion of Pawleys Island called Litchfield Beach, Litchfield Country Club is one of the Grand Strand’s venerable, classic places for a round of golf. Designed by Willard, it has been delighting vacation visitors and loyal locals alike since 1966. It is the eldest member of the prestigious Waccamaw Golf Trail, an association of the best courses along the southern end of the Grand Strand.

Litchfield Country Club’s back Blue tees measure 6,692 yards, with a Ratingof 72.9 and a Slope of 132—not overly taxing on players of any level, to architect Byrd’s credit. Its other three sets of tees weigh in at 6,295, 5,912 and 5,308 yards, respectively, meaning the course is enjoyable for all levels of player. Add in the relative scarcity of intimidating and punishing forced carries over water and it is easy to see why Litchfield Country Club has been going strong for nearly a half-century.

Absent tremendous length, Litchfield protects itself with relatively small greens and tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The best hole on the course is the 520-yard par five 13th hole. A tee shot to a fairway angled from right to left tempts players to challenge more of a flanking water hazard than is prudent in hopes of setting themselves up to reach the green in two shots.

Litchfield Country Club’s clubhouse is a wonderful place to relax before or after one’s round, with its classical Southern charm. The intimate, well-stocked pro shop contains all one needs to stock up for a round and the practice facility—grass driving range, putting green and chipping green—is perfect for preparing for a round or working out the kinks.
