The Hackler Course is one of the most vibrant facilities along the Grand Strand. The reason for the energy is simple: the Hackler Course, which is located on the campus of Coastal Carolina, is largely staffed by members of the university’s acclaimed Professional Golf Management Program.
There is PGA professional overseeing the operation, but students at Coastal are a big part of the game’s future, and if the Hackler Course is any indication, golf is in good hands.
As part of a 2011 makeover, which coincided with the layout changing its name from Quail Creek to the Hackler Course, the layout received new MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens. The putting surfaces were also reshaped and more than 50 bunkers were removed.
Architect Craig Schreiner, who led the renovation of Pine Lakes, spearheaded the effort at the Hackler and his work has been greeted by rave reviews. The greens on the second and 18th were moved, adding to the layout’s challenge, but Schreiner left the routing intact.
As part of the project, a new state-of-the-art practice facility was installed, allowing players to work on all facets of their game.
The course is named after late Air Force General James Hackler, a World War II fighter pilot who later invented the idea of the Myrtle Beach golf package.
