MURRELLS INLET – Baylor comes to the Fall Palmetto High School Golf Championship to test itself against competition from across the county and enjoy a team trip. The annual addition to the school trophy case is certainly a nice bonus.
The Chattanooga, Tenn, school shot a second-day 302 and cruised to a 13-stroke victory Saturday afternoon at Wachesaw Plantation East. Playing without their No. 2 player, the Raiders shot a two-day total of 599 to win the girls Palmetto for the third consecutive year. Lexington (S.C.) High School finished second (613). (final leaderboard)
“We love coming down here,” Baylor coach King Oehmig said. “It‘s a treat for the girls. The South Carolina coast is such a great spot. It gives us a totally different venue and some great teams (to play against) ... This is exciting. Our girls are having a ball and they can’t wait to get out to the beach (after the tournament).”
Baylor also had three of the top six finishers in the individual competition, but Lexington (S.C.) High School’s Maureen Dunnagan won medalist honors. Dunnagan shot a 1-under 71 to rally from a two-stroke deficit.
Dunnagan bogeyed No. 1 and No. 18 but she was superb in between, recording birdies on No. 3, 6, 13 and 14. Dunnagan finished the tournament 3-over, a shot better than A&M Consolidated’s (College Station, Tex.) Erin Jang and Baylor’s Sofia Hoglund. Baylor’s Elena Pesch finished fourth at 5-over and Lexington’s Kathryn Miranda rounded out the top five at 6-over.
In the boys tournament, Centreville (Va.) High School swept the team and individual competition. The Wildcats shot a 307 at Tradition Golf Club, finishing with a two-day total of 615, good enough to beat Dobyns-Bennett (Kingsport, Tenn.) by 12 strokes.
First round leader Mountain Ridge was disqualified after a player signed an incorrect scorecard, clearing the way for Centreville’s victory. (final leaderboard)
Centreville’s Noori Hyun fired a 72 to edge Dobyns-Bennett’s Alex Ratliff by a shot. Hyun, who shot a 1-under 143 in the tournament, double-bogeyed 16 but rallied to birdie 18 for the victory.
Cookeville shot 663, good for a third place finish.
