Grand Strand Courses Named to GOLF Magazine's "Top 100 You Can Play" Ranking
October 22, 2008, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – GOLF Magazine has named four Myrtle Beach area courses to its prestigious “Top 100 Courses You Can Play” list, which was published in the magazine’s September 2008 issue. The prestigious list, which ranks America’s best public access courses, recognized Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, The Love Course at Barefoot Resort and Tidewater Golf Club & Plantation.
Caledonia was the Grand Strand’s highest ranked course, at No. 25 with The Dunes Club at No. 47 and The Love Course at Barefoot Resort at No. 86. Tidewater, a longtime resident on the ranking, rejoined the list at No. 100, after missing the 2006 ranking. Caledonia and Dunes Club were members of the biennial list in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 while The Love Course at Barefoot Resort debuted in 2006 and moved up nine spots in 2008.
GOLF Magazine debuted an additional ranking of the best courses in every state in 2008 entitled “The Best Courses Near You.” South Carolina placed 20 courses on the inaugural ranking with 13 of the courses located along the Grand Strand area and six courses in the Top 10. Caledonia led the “Best Courses Near You” ranking at No.3; Dunes Club followed at No. 4; The Love Course at Barefoot Resort was No. 6; Tidewater came in at No.7; The Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort ranked No. 7; True Blue at No. 9; TPC Myrtle Beach at No. 11; The Heathland Course at Legends Resort at No. 12; Heritage Club at No. 14; Glen Dornoch at No. 16; King’s North at Myrtle Beach National at No. 17; Grande Dunes at No. 18 and Pawleys Plantation at No. 19.
The North Carolina state ranking also contained an additional five more Grand Strand area courses; Rivers Edge at No.7; Leopard’s Chase at No. 8; Tiger’s Eye at No. 9; Oyster Bay at No.11 and The Rees Jones Course at Sea Trail at No. 17.
“The quality of the Myrtle Beach golf experience has never been better as the Grand Strand area placed more courses on the GOLF Magazine rankings than any other golf destination in the nation, east of the Mississippi,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “It’s a tremendous honor for Caledonia, The Dunes Club, The Love Course and Tidewater to earn a spot among ‘America’s Top 100’ public courses, and a feather in the cap for the entire Grand Strand area to have so many courses recognized on the best of South Carolina and North Carolina list.”
Only courses open to the public are considered for GOLF Magazine’s list. A ballot with more than 400 daily-fee, resort, and semi-private courses was sent to a trusted panel of PGA section directors, regional golf association directors, golf writers, and well-traveled members of the golf community. The “Top 100” ballot was posted on GOLF Magazine’s web site, GolfOnline.com for a few weeks last spring. Members of the public who had played at least 20 courses on the list were invited to vote.
