5 Things You Didn't Know About Myrtle Beach's Golden Oldies

1. Sports Illustrated was founded at Pine Lakes International Country Club: In 1954 a group of Time-Life executives, including Henry Luce Booth, played Pine Lakes and made plans for Sports Illustrated, America’s most successful weekly sports magazine, on their trip.

2. The Dunes Club has hosted some of golf’s premier events: Myrtle Beach’s most revered course, the Dunes Club has a rich history in competitive golf. The Robert Trent Jones layout has hosted the U.S. Women’s Open, the Senior Tour Championship, the finals of PGA Q-School and the finals of the World Amateur Handicap Championship.

3. Whispering Pines is Myrtle Beach’s only “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.” The course works to preserve wildlife throughout the property – a task made easier by the fact there is no housing at Whispering Pines.

4. Litchfield Country Club was the first course in the Pawleys Island/Litchfield area.

5. Beachwood is the oldest public course on the North Strand, helping blaze the trail for the high-end offerings currently in the area.
