Sandpiper Bay to Renovate Greens

Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club, a Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday member, announced today that they will begin a major greens renovation project starting June 2008. The Dan Maples designed 27-hole public golf course in Sunset Beach, N.C. hired Modern Turf, from Rembert, S.C., to convert all putting greens to MiniVerde Ultradwarf Bermuda Grass from Sandpiper’s 1987 original Penn Cross Bent Grass greens.

The renovation will be done in three phases so the course will never close and golfers will always have 18 holes to play. The Sand nine holes will be redone this summer, the Piper nine in the summer of 2009 and the Bay nine during in the summer of 2010.

MiniVerde Bermuda was selected because it is the highest-ranked grass for this area according to the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program. MiniVerde Bermuda provides a smooth, high-quality putting green that can handle the heat, humidity and stress caused by the Carolina summers. MiniVerde Bermuda is in place at TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour Players Championship, TPC Myrtle Beach, and was also recently chosen by East Lake in Atlanta, home of the 2007 PGA TOUR Championship.

During this summer’s renovation process, Sandpiper Bay will take the opportunity to improve the playability of the golf course by removing trees and enhancing fairways, rough areas and bunkers. Sandpiper will also resurface the cart paths on the Sands course and refurbish bridge structures. The Sandpiper Bay restrooms and clubhouse areas were just renovated to meet the growing needs of the club’s guests and members.

“Sandpiper Bay has always been a favorite of Myrtle Beach area golfers and by adding MiniVerde Bermuda, we’ll continue to provide superb course conditions without closing our course,” said Tim Tilma, Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club general manager. “Sandpiper Bay is a great facility and we’re getting better every day. I encourage golfers to come try out our new greens this fall.”
