Myrtle Beach Area to Host Closest-to-the-Pin Contests in October and November
October 12, 2009, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Twenty-six Myrtle Beach area golf courses will participate in closest-to-the-pin contests on four consecutive Saturdays, October 17th through November 7th, with all proceeds going to the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign.
With a $20 contribution to Know Your Score, golfers can participate in the hole-in-one contest, receive a sleeve of golf balls and have a chance to win a Caribbean cruise, a 42” HDTV or a $250 Myrtle Beach Golf Shop gift certificate in a drawing to be held November 20th. The person who hits the closest shot of the day at each course will win their choice of a Nike or Wilson putter, valued at $120, or a Wilson driver, valued at $150, from the pro shop. If a golfer records a hole-in-one, he or she will win $1,000 cash.

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday recently announced that more than $65,000 was raised during the second annual Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala on August 29, 2009. Entertainment personalities and former professional athletes who attended the golf tournament and gala included honorary spokesperson, and Syracuse University head basketball coach, Jim Boeheim; actor Craig T. Nelson, well known for his role on the television show “Coach”; Bobby Cremins, current College of Charleston head basketball coach who also led the Georgia Tech program for 19 years; former member of the Big Red Machine and an 11-year Major League Baseball veteran, Doug Flynn; former Yankees catcher Rick Cerone; Dan Hampton, a 12-year member of the Chicago Bears and a 2001 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee; GOLF Channel personality Charlie Rymer; Ewa Mataya Laurance, 2008 World Trick Shot champion and World 9-Ball champion; ESPN billiards commentator and prostate cancer survivor Mitch Laurance; world-renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis; Wes Matthews, a member of the 1986 and 1987 Los Angeles Lakers World Championship teams; and Tony Womack, a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2001 World Championship team.
“We’ve raised more than $65,000 in donations for the Know Your Score campaign so far in 2009 and hope to reach the $100,000 mark with the October closest-to-the-pin contests,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “The entire Myrtle Beach golf community has eagerly embraced the Know Your Score campaign and we look forward to continuing our work with ZERO – the Project to End Prostate Cancer in 2010 to help educate the importance of early and frequent testing.”
