Back to Basics
What is square?
Students often say to me "My husband tells me I am not square, but I have no idea what he is talking about!" Square means that your body is parallel to your target. There are two lines in alignment 1- your target line, which is where your clubface is pointing and this is where you want the ball to go. 2 - your body line. This is where you are standing. In a perfect world your feet, knees, hips and shoulders would be parallel to your target line.
What is open?
Assuming you are a right-handed player, if you are 'open' this means that your body is diagonally left of your target line.
What is closed?
Assuming you are a right-handed player, if you are 'closed' this means that your body is diagonally right of your target line.
What does all this mean?
If you are not set up square your body has a hard time swing efficiently. This could cause serious directional challenges. While practicing on the range lay down a club behind your ball (approximately 6-12"). This will represent your target line. Now, make sure you set up with your body parallel to the club on the ground. You will now be square.
