Over the Sand Bunker and on the Green

So here we are, 20 yards away from making a par and there is only one thing standing between you and winning that $1 skin - a bunker about 15 ft wide. It wouldn't be that bad except that it's really deep, intimidating and guards the entire perimeter of the green.

First things first - tell yourself that you can do this shot. The power of positive thinking can do wonders for you golf game. Secondly, select a club that has some loft, such as a pitching wedge, sand wedge or lobe wedge. Now take a few practice swings where you brush the grass. Remember hitting down makes the ball go up and you can't hit down if you can't find the plant earth J I'm not suggesting that you take huge divots, simply that you brush the grass. Soften your hands and relax your arms as you address the ball. Now emulate the same swing (a 3/4 swing is preferable) you just did except now there is a ball in the way. If you brush the grass and FOLLOW-THROUGH your ball will fly high and land softly on the green. The key here is the follow-through. Often when we get nervous we forget to pivot. Your body rotation is an essential part of getting good trajectory.

A good drill to help with this is while on the range put a tee in the ground. Practice hitting a 1/2 to 3/4 swing with a good follow-through and knocking the tee out of the ground. Remember your soft hands and a good finish. Once your feel confident with that, put a ball down and a tee in front of your ball. Same drill, knock the tee out. This will help us conquer our 20 yard shot over the bunker and on the green.
