Jim Boeheim & Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Partner
to Fight Prostate Cancer in 2009
Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s Know Your Score – Fight Prostate Cancer campaign has added a hall of fame coach to lead its staff in 2009. Legendary Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim, a prostate cancer survivor, will be the national spokesperson for Know Your Score in 2009.
“I am thrilled to join the ‘Know Your Score’ team to help raise money for prostate cancer research,” said Boeheim. “I’ve been involved in athletics all my life and know that teams that are united have better chances of defeating their opponent. Prostate cancer is definitely one of the most difficult challenges that I’ve faced and I look forward to working with the strong team of Zero and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday to help raise money and awareness of the number one health threat to men.”
The Know Your Score – Fight Prostate Cancer initiative raises money throughout the year with closest-to-the-pin contests and will culminate with the second annual Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala, which includes a silent auction, on August 29, 2009.
Boeheim, who guided Syracuse to the 2003 NCAA Tournament title a year after defeating prostate cancer, will launch his efforts on behalf of Know Your Score with an interview at 8:10 a.m. on Friday, April 3 on ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike Show. Boeheim will also be interviewed Monday afternoon, April 6, on the nationally syndicated Dan Patrick Show.
Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, Boeheim has a career coaching record of 799-288 at Syracuse, his alma mater. During his 33 years of coaching, the New York native has captured a national title, seven Big East regular season titles and five Big East Tournament titles. In 2008, he served as an assistant coach on the USA Basketball Team that captured the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. He ranks tenth among active Division I coaches in winning percentage and fifth in victories.
Boeheim has led the Orange to 25 NCAA Tournament appearances, three Final Fours and a record 31 20-win seasons. His teams have long been known for their stifling zone defense, and Boeheim has sent a steady stream of players to the NBA, including Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony.
In April of 2008, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday joined forces with Zero and launched the annual campaign to fight prostate cancer. The “Know Your Score” campaign slogan refers to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test given to men 50 years of age or older to help detect prostate cancer. A low score on the PSA test is good news and is the best screening tool currently available when used with the physical prostate exam, according to Zero.
With the support of the entire Myrtle Beach golf community, more than $100,000 was raised in 2008 for prostate cancer research through closest-to5:03 PM 4/2/2009-the-pin contests at area golf courses, a golf tournament and silent auction and fundraisers held at the PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship. Zero brought their 40-foot “Drive Against Prostate Cancer Mobile Screening RV” to Myrtle Beach twice in 2008 and provided free prostate screens, that normally cost $200 in a doctor’s office, to more than 750 men.
“We are excited about starting the second year of the ‘Know Your Score’ campaign and look forward to building on our success from the inaugural year,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “Myrtle Beach is known as the ‘Golf Capital of the World’ and we see more than one million golfers per year here, most of which are the exact Zero demographic, men who are 45 years of age and older. The entire Myrtle Beach golf community has made a long-term commitment to raise awareness of the dangers of prostate cancer and we believe that Coach Boeheim will convey that message to be screened early and often.

About the Know Your Score Campaign
Myrtle Beach, recognizing the opportunity it has with the large number of male visitors to area golf courses, has formed the Know Your Score – Fight Prostate Cancer effort to make a difference in battling this disease. The Myrtle Beach Golf community has formed a steering committee, and along with ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer, we intend to raise $250,000 for research and to educate men on the importance of early detection of prostate cancer.Legendary college basketball coach Jim Boeheim is a prostate cancer survivor and will serve as the 2009 National Chairman for Know Your Score. Jim is very active in the campaign and is a perfect example of how early detection can save your life.
Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala - August 23, 2008
The sun was shining, the stars came out and the first annual “Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer” Celebrity Golf Tournament enjoyed a spectacular launch. Played August 23 at Long Bay Club, the Know Your Score tournament attracted a host of celebrities, including honorary chairman and prostate cancer survivor Ken Griffey, Sr., nationally renowned comedian Henry Cho, NBA Hall of Famer Sam Jones and 2001 World Series hero Tony Womack and many others. After an idyllic day at Long Bay, a silent auction and gala were held in conjunction with the PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship that evening at Kingston Plantation. The gala was highlighted by a performance from Cho that had the crowd howling in laughter and an emotional speech by ESPN personality Mitch Laurance, a prostate cancer survivor and one the event’s driving forces.
The tournament and silent auction generated $45,000 for the fight against prostate cancer and just as importantly, laid the groundwork for even bigger things in the future. The Know Your Score campaign is still in its infancy, but the success of this year’s tournament has buoyed its dreams of becoming a national leader in the fight to eradicate prostate cancer.
