Love Course at Barefoot Resort and Golf
When Davis Love III was tapped to design a course at Barefoot Resort, his architectural chops didn’t measure up to those of Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Greg Norman, who also crafted courses at the facility. Love wasted little time in revealing those concerns as folly.
The Love Course took center stage upon Barefoot’s opening, solidifying Davis’ reputation as a premium architect. “Golf Digest” has ranked the Love Course as Myrtle Beach’s best and named it one of the “100 Greatest Public Courses” in America, among the many other accolades the layout received.
Critical acclaim isn’t nearly as important as popular appeal and Myrtle Beach golfers rendered a unanimous decision on the layout – they Love it. Since its opening in 2000, the course has been among the area’s most popular.
A native Carolinian, Love created a course that is visually stimulating, imminently playable, and yet still challenging to low handicap players. The course’s fairways are generous, allowing players latitude off the tee, but the greens are reminiscent of some of the great Donald Ross’ work, meaning they’re generally smaller and feature ample undulation.
Visually, Love incorporated faux ruins of an old plantation home along holes 3-7, a unique feature that adds to the layout’s appeal.
Love is one of the most popular golfers of his generation and his namesake course can make the same claim about its place in the Myrtle Beach golf area.
