Lion's Paw Golf Links
The first Big Cat at Ocean Ridge Plantation, Lion’s Paw, which launched two Grand Strand institutions, continues to roar.
The success of Lion’s Paw paved the way for Ocean Ridge to grow into a four-course facility that is one of the most popular on the Myrtle Beach golf scene. It also helped launch the solo career of architect Tim Cate, who was Willard Byrd’s chief lieutenant on the project; he later and went on to design the other three courses at Ocean Ridge.
Lion’s Paw uses the area’s native pine forests and wetlands to enhance the layout’s natural beauty and give golfers that much needed the thrill they are looking for. The course rewards accuracy off the tee and precision iron play.
The greens at Lion’s Paw are relatively small by modern standards, but they arethey’re among the best on the Grand Strand. Lion’s Paw received new miniverde greens, restoring the putting complexes to their original size, as part of a 2011 facelift, and golfers have raved about the results.
Collectively, Lion’s Paw is defined by its par 3s, which are among the toughest and most memorable in the area. Three of the par 3s play over water and are at least 175 yards from the white tees.
Lion’s Paw never fails to leave Myrtle Beach golfers purring.
