Dye Course at Barefoot Resort and Golf
Pete Dye is arguably golf’s greatest living architect, and his work at Barefoot Resort is another substantial addition to his legacy. The Dye Course, which has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses by “Golf Digest,” is one of the best and most challenging Myrtle Beach golf courses.
The course makes great use of Dye’s trademark railroad ties and yawning waste bunkers. The course itself is visually intimidating. Pete Dye doesn’t design pushover golf courses and his namesake layout at Barefoot is no different, but the course is playable.
In typical Dye fashion, tee shots appear much more daunting than they are. Dye’s use of bunkering creates the illusion of tight fairways when ample room exists on most every hole; but, players must be able to handle the mental challenge.
On a layout with one outstanding hole after another, the 9th and 18th holes standout the most. The holes play parallel to each other, separated by a large lake with the stately clubhouse serving as a backdrop. The holes provide a dramatic conclusion to each side.
The Dye Course has hosted the Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am for 10 years running, an event that highlights the quality of the layout.
