Know Your Score Campaign Donates $21,477 To Fight Prostate Cancer

check presentation.jpgDuring a ceremony at Martin’s PGA Tour Superstore in North Myrtle Beach earlier today, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s Know Your Score campaign donated $21,477 to benefit the national prostate cancer organization, ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer. This spring the campaign raised the money with “Closest to the Pin” contests at more than 25 Myrtle Beach area golf courses.

“For three years, we have worked to raise awareness and to help fight prostate cancer through the Know Your Score campaign,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “With the spring event and our upcoming ‘Links and Laughs’ golf tournament and gala in August, we hope to raise a total of $70,000 for Know Your Score. Thank you to all the golfers in Myrtle Beach who participated in the ‘Closest to the Pin’ fundraiser and joined in the fight against prostate cancer.”

The Myrtle Beach area golf courses that participated in the weekly contests included King’s North at Myrtle Beach National, Glen Dornoch, Willbrook Plantation, Founders Club, Rivers Edge and numerous others along the Grand Strand. Participating golf courses set up one par three hole for the closest to the pin contest each week. For $10, golfers were allowed one shot to win the weekly grand prize. If a shot was the closest to the pin that day, that golfer won a new driver or putter from Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. Each golfer participating in the contest received a sleeve of golf balls, and any golfer scoring a hole-in-one won $1,000. No golfer was able to score an ace at any of the participating golf courses during the promotion.

The contests were administered by Atlantic Golf Promotions to ensure the fairness and accuracy of the weekly results, and Atlantic assisted in raising money for the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign.

Since April of 2008, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday has joined forces with ZERO and supported the annual campaign to fight prostate cancer. The Know Your Score campaign slogan refers to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test given to men 50 years of age or older to help detect prostate cancer. A low score on the PSA test is good news and is the best screening tool currently available when used with the physical prostate exam, according to ZERO.

“Each year, we are amazed at the generosity of the Myrtle Beach golf community,” said Skip Lockwood, CEO of ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer. “Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday has been the driving force behind the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign and we couldn’t be happier with their efforts in assisting us in the fight to find a cure for prostate cancer.”

This year, award-winning journalist and television personality, Jim Huber, has been serving as the 2010 national spokesman of the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign. Huber has been spreading awareness about prostate cancer research and the importance of regular screening through national and regional interviews, and will be participating in Myrtle Beach’s Know Your Score Links & Laughs Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala in August.

With the support of the entire Myrtle Beach golf community, more than $200,000 has been raised over the last three years for prostate cancer research through closest-to-the-pin contests at area golf courses, a golf tournament and silent auction and fundraisers previously held at the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship.

Monday’s ceremony was staged adjacent to ZERO’s 40-foot “Drive Against Prostate Cancer Mobile Screening Clinic” which offered free prostate cancer screenings at Martin’s PGA Tour Superstore for all men. The mobile RV has visited Myrtle Beach three times since 2008 and has provided free prostate screens for hundreds of men which would normally cost $200 in a doctor’s office.
