Celebrities Prepare To Descend on Grand Strand To Fight Cancer

boeheim.jpgCelebrities of all types have long visited Myrtle Beach for the same reason most everyone else does – a great trip. On August 29, actors, athletes and musicians will flock to the area in hopes of using their fame to fight a disease that has affected nearly everyone: cancer.

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign, in its second year with a high-powered national spokesperson and an ambitious fundraising goal, peaks with the 2nd annual Celebrity Golf Tournament & Gala on August 29 at Long Bay Club.

Legendary Syracuse head men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim, a prostate cancer survivor, has joined forces with the Myrtle Beach golf community in an effort to raise $250,000 to fight prostate cancer.

Boeheim will lead a star-studded tournament field that is slated to include actor Craig T. Nelson, star of the hit show “Coach,” NFL Hall of Famer and former Chicago Bear Dan Hampton, former Major League Baseball stars and World Series champions Ken Griffey Sr. and Tony Womack, among others.

The Gala, which includes a cocktail hour, silent auction, live entertainment and dinner, follows the tournament and will be held at Kingston Plantation.

“We believe the Know Your Score campaign can help raise prostate cancer awareness not only in Myrtle Beach but across the country,” Bill Golden, MBGH’s president, said. “It’s a disease that has impacted practically every American family, but prostate cancer can be defeated through education and early testing. We hope our efforts are able to make a significant difference in both of those areas.”

The most common non-skin cancer in America, prostate cancer afflicts 1 in 6 men, the majority of that total over the age of 40. As the world’s most popular golf destination, that demographic is Myrtle Beach’s core audience. As a result, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday teamed up with Zero: The Project to End Prostate Cancer to launch the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign.

Know Your Score is a multifaceted effort that also includes closest-to-the-pin contests and out-of-market fundraising tournaments. Money raised by Know Your Score is dedicated to improve research, early testing and education.

Teams in the celebrity golf tournament and tables at the Gala remain available.
